As you may have already found, there is a step by step instructions on how to create a template image (to paint the real maps on) and how to assign it back to the object in Texporter's help file (which is in the zip you have downloaded).

Hi thk, I can recommend you of the book:'modeling a character in 3d max' (by paul steed), which on it's final chapter deals with texporter in a step by step manner, texture pages size... I've purchased it by amazon.com
